Day 8: Knowing His Name
True trust is not born from facts about God, but from personal experience with His character.
“Those who know your name trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you.” Psalm 9:10 (NIV)
There is a big difference between knowing about someone and truly knowing them. You may know your spouse's name, but knowing their heart, character, love, and faithfulness is something entirely different. When you truly know them, you trust them differently than if you only knew what's written on a nametag.
Psalm 9:10 uses the Hebrew word yada, which means an intimate, experiential knowledge, not just intellectual, but lived.
This is what happens when you walk with God long enough to see His faithfulness up close and personal: when you see Him as Jehovah-Jireh (your Provider) when your bank account is low, or Jehovah-Rapha (your Healer) when your doctor's report leaves you breathless.
When David speaks of knowing God's name, he refers to understanding God's revealed character and nature.
God's names throughout Scripture reveal His character. Each name reveals a facet of His unchanging nature. When we truly know these names, not just memorize them, we discover that God's character is the foundation of our trust.
Just as a child trusts their parents not for what they can give, but for who they are, we are also called to trust God for His character, not just His actions. When we don't understand what He does, we can rest in what we know He is.
God's actions may sometimes perplex us, but His character remains constant. He is always good, always faithful, always loving. When situations shake our confidence in what God can do, we can anchor our souls in who He is. His character never changes, even when our understanding is limited.
My Prayer:
Father, I don't just want to know about You. I want to know You. Take me beyond intellectual knowledge to heart knowledge. May my trust be rooted in Your unchanging character, not in my changing feelings. Show me who You are in my everyday moments. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Questions to Reflect:
1. What aspect of God's character do you most need to experience today—provision, healing, peace, protection?
2. What would your life be like if your decisions were based on who God is, not on fear of what might happen?
