Even when God calls us to leadership in His kingdom, there is no guarantee that the path will be easy. Leadership brings both triumphs and trials, moments of clarity and times of deep struggle. It is in these difficult moments that our choices define us, and we must rely on the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Left to our own hearts and understanding, we are bound to falter. As Proverbs 3:5 reminds us: "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding."
The life of Saul serves as a powerful example of the dangers of relying on our own strength instead of trusting in God's will. Saul, a young man from the tribe of Benjamin, was physically impressive—tall, handsome, and full of promise (1 Samuel 9:1-2). He was chosen by God and anointed by the prophet Samuel to be the first king of Israel (1 Samuel 10:1). Saul began his reign with success, leading military victories and uniting the people (1 Samuel 11).
Yet, despite his promising start, Saul’s leadership faltered because he relied on his own wisdom rather than God’s direction. He disobeyed God’s commands, most notably when he failed to fully destroy the Amalekites as instructed (1 Samuel 15). His disobedience led to God’s rejection of him as king (1 Samuel 15:26). From that point, Saul struggled with insecurity, fear, and jealousy, especially toward David, whom God chose as his successor (1 Samuel 16–19). His inability to fully surrender to God’s will caused isolation, paranoia, and ultimately, his downfall.
Saul’s life teaches us the importance of obedience and humility. His refusal to trust God fully and accept correction led to poor decisions, damaged relationships, and personal despair. His leadership became marked by fear, insecurity, and a lack of repentance, despite the potential he once carried.
As leaders in any capacity, we face a choice: will we lean on our own understanding, as Saul did, or will we open our hearts to the guidance of the Holy Spirit? True leadership requires dependence on God’s wisdom, humility to accept correction, and a heart surrendered to His will.
Prayer:
Father, you know our hearts and have called us according to Your will. Guide us through the Holy Spirit to lead with love, grace, and mercy. Help us to trust in You fully and to follow Your will, even in challenging times. Amen.
