A 5-Day Journey Exploring Moses’ Burning Questions

Dangerously Misunderstood

Throughout the burning-bush encounter, we’ve seen Moses wrestle with self-doubt, insecurity, and fear of rejection. Despite God’s repeated reassurances that God would be with him, and despite the miraculous signs, Moses remained hesitant. His next objection? “I’m not a good public speaker.” It became clear that Moses was allowing fear and doubt to become an excuse for disobedience.

Moses feared that the people would misunderstand him because of his lack of eloquence, and he would be ineffective in mobilizing them. The fear of being misunderstood is painfully relatable. Many of us worry that even our best intentions might be misinterpreted by others. And in a world where conflict often grows from misunderstanding, that fear can silence us and leave us questioning God’s ability.

In Exodus 4:11–12, the Lord said to Moses, “Who gave human beings their mouths? Who makes them deaf or mute? Who gives them sight or makes them blind? Is it not I, the Lord? Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.” God was firmly but lovingly correcting Moses by reminding him of his authority. Sometimes, we, too, need a firm reminder of who God is in our lives.

Even though Moses doubted the power of his voice, God still used him to warn Pharaoh and to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. This shows us that the same God who made our mouths will give us words to speak. Whether we’re unsure of how to share our faith with someone, or what to say in a difficult or uncomfortable situation, or how to get our message across to others, God will guide us through it.

Today, let’s take a step of faith and move beyond our fears. Let’s devote time to reflect on who God is in our lives and all that he has done in his power and authority. If we are willing to cling to him who understands, we can overcome the fear of being misunderstood.

Reflect

  • In what areas of your life might you be depending on your own understanding?
  • Today, focus on one area where you need to trust God’s voice over your fear.

Prayer

Lord, give me courage to speak, even when I’m afraid, and help me trust that you will give me the words. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
