Knowing God’s Name
The name you know someone by says a lot about the nature of your relationship with that person. For instance, everyone is expected to address the president of the United States as Mr. President. This title is meant to be respectful, and for those who haven’t met the president, this is an appropriate name. But it’s not very intimate is it? Can you imagine the president’s children running into his arms for a hug and calling him Mr. President? Probably not!
God has many names in Scripture, all of which are true and important. God is sometimes called Jehovah Jireh, which means “the Lord will provide.” At other times He is called Jehovah Nissi, which means “the Lord your banner.” Sometimes it is appropriate to call God by these names, just like it is appropriate to address the president as Mr. President. But there is one name that God loves more than any other, and that name is “Abba,” which means “Father.”
Jesus says to God in John 17:26, “And I have declared to them Your name, and will declare it, that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them.” Jesus came to reveal God as Father. He wanted others to experience the same relationship with God that He enjoyed.
God has so many wonderful names that describe who He is. God the Father is your provider, your banner, your healer, and so much more, but the name that God most longs to hear from your lips is Father.
Prayer for the day:
Today, thank God for revealing His name through Jesus, and ask that you will learn to call him by the name Father.
