Addressing Our Affectionsنموونە

Here’s one of the most beautiful truths about reordering our affections: Jesus actually cares about this—and He helps us do it. When we surrender the things competing for our hearts and invite Him into the process, He meets us there. Not with condemnation, but with reminders of His unending love.
There’s a verse (Psalm 37:4) we often quote to defend our desires: “He gives us the desires of our hearts.” But that phrase is actually the second half of the verse. The first part says, “Delight yourself in the Lord.” In other words, the promise is not that God fulfills whatever we want—it’s that as we delight in Him, our wants begin to change.
So how does this happen? Not through force or suppression, but through surrender. As we delight ourselves in the Lord—spending time with Him, abiding in His presence, trusting Him with our lives—our affections are slowly reshaped. The things that once consumed us begin to loosen their grip.
Over time, we discover something surprising: we are no longer driven by our desires—He becomes our desire. The gospel does not work by demanding that we love God more through sheer willpower. Instead, it works by revealing a love so great that our hearts begin to change in response. Jesus doesn’t merely command our affection; He captures it.
Throughout Scripture, we see that transformation happens not when people try harder, but when they encounter Jesus more deeply. Zacchaeus didn’t give away his wealth because he was told to—he did so because grace had visited his house. Peter didn’t lay down his life because he was disciplined enough—he did it because he had been restored by love. The woman at the well didn’t abandon her old pursuits because she was corrected—she did so because she had been truly seen and known.
Jesus reorders our loves by offering Himself as better. It is at the point in which we reaffirm that Jesus is better than the thing we have placed above Him, that we find contentment in Him.
Reflection Questions:
When you hear the phrase “delight yourself in the Lord,” what does that honestly look like in your current season of life?
What about Jesus has captured your heart before—and where might He be inviting you deeper now?
Are there any desires you’ve tried to suppress rather than surrender to God? What might it look like to bring those honestly into His presence instead?
