Learning to Live Wiselyنموونە

Day 2: Asking for Wisdom
After understanding that the fear of the Lord is the foundation of wisdom, a natural question arises: how can we grow in wisdom each day? The Bible teaches that wisdom is not reserved for a select few with greater experience or knowledge, but it is a gift that God is willing to give to those who sincerely ask and seek Him.
The apostle James writes to believers who were facing various trials and challenges in their faith and offers a clear instruction: “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God” (James 1:5a, New King James Version). This statement is deeply encouraging because it acknowledges a reality we all share: many times, we lack the wisdom needed to face life’s situations and make the right decisions.
Biblical wisdom does not necessarily mean having all the answers immediately, but learning to depend on God for direction in life’s decisions. When James encourages us to ask for wisdom, he does not present God as a distant judge, but as a generous Father who is willing to listen to and care for His children. The same verse affirms that He “gives to all liberally and without reproach” (James 1:5b, New King James Version). In other words, God is not bothered when we come to Him for help. On the contrary, He delights when we recognize our need for His guidance—but we must come sincerely and genuinely. This teaching reminds us that the Christian life is not about moving forward relying solely on our own abilities, even if they have been given by God. Often, we may feel the pressure to have everything under control or to know exactly what to do at every moment. However, Scripture invites us to live differently—in constant, daily dependence on the wisdom that comes from above.
Later, James describes this divine wisdom with characteristics that are very different from what the world typically values. He explains that the wisdom from God is “first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits” (James 3:17, New King James Version). This means that biblical wisdom is not only reflected in right decisions, but also in a transformed character. When we choose to seek God’s wisdom, He not only guides our decisions, but He also shapes our hearts according to His will. As He works in us, He gives us wisdom to respond with patience instead of impulsiveness, with humility instead of pride, and with grace instead of harshness. In this way, wisdom becomes visible evidence of God’s work in our lives.
The book of Proverbs, in affirming that the Lord is the source of true wisdom, highlights that it is not merely about memorizing useful information; rather, true transformation flows from Him along with wisdom. Wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord, but it grows as we walk daily in fellowship with Him and as He continues to work in our lives.
Today we can remember that we are not called to face life alone or to rely solely on our own understanding. God invites His children to seek His direction in prayer, trusting that He hears and responds according to His goodness.
Reflection Questions
- In what recent situations have I felt that I lack the wisdom to make decisions?
- Am I in the habit of seeking my own solutions first, or can I honestly say that I go to God in prayer first?
- What practical step can I take today to depend more on the wisdom God gives?
Prayer
Lord, I recognize that many times I try to handle the situations in my life with my own understanding. Today, I choose to come before You in humility and ask You for wisdom above all else. Guide my thoughts, my decisions, and my words. Form in me a heart that reflects the wisdom that comes from You—full of peace, mercy, and truth. Amen.
