God cannot be known as we know a machine, an idea, or a tree, which we are able to “objectify.” He is truly known only in relationship. In the contemplative tradition, Richard Rohr describes how we can come to know God through relationship—by joining in a “dance” of holiness and love with the Father, Son, and Spirit—through which we are transformed, pray meaningfully, and serve others in love.

Finding yourself torn by the tensions of your identity is more common than you think— but also painful. Making sense of your story with all its twists, turns and ambiguities can compel us to settle on an identity that’s not our own. Yet God extends a powerful invitation through His word and in the end, we must learn to make a home with Him in the tension of our identity.

Our world in the best of times seems uncertain and upside down. If it wasn’t for Jesus, the Son of God, we would have no hope. Every Christmas reminds us that the gift of Immanuel—God with us—is a gift that keeps on giving. We are never alone, from now until eternity. That is worth celebrating.

Christmas for many of us is a time of celebration and community, but for others it can be a time of loneliness and pain.
