 Love is… more excellent  

Walk daily in the more excellent way of love.

In 1 Corinthians 12:31, the apostle Paul writes: But earnestly desire the best gifts. And yet I show you a more excellent way.

As the apostle Paul begins to delve into the teaching on the gifts of the Holy Spirit, he pauses to talk about something he claims is very important – “a more excellent way.” He teaches about the love of God, and the supremacy of this love over every other virtue, accomplishment or gift. In the face of mountain-moving faith, speaking in tongues of angels, knowing all mysteries and prophecies, love still stands stall. 

In 1 Corinthians 13, he continues to describe what this love is and how this love would behave and relate to people. This is the exhortation he gives us - to pursue love before all things. This is not to say that we don’t need the gifts of the Holy Spirit, or that we should not do works of charity, generosity and kindness. The point he puts across is that everything should be motivated by love, the love for people. Without it, all the good things we do are empty. And we know that empty vessels make the most noise. 

Life is pointless if it is not under girded and bathed in the love of God, if love is not flowing through us to others. 

When you walk the way of love, you are walking the most excellent way. When you look at people around you, when you see their needs, whether spiritual or physical, be driven by the love of God and step out to meet those needs. 

Be compelled by love, be moved by love, be directed by love.

Prayer

Father, thank You for teaching us to love people, to be moved, compelled and directed by love. We ask that You will help us, by Your Spirit, to do everything we do, motivated by love. Help us to walk the more excellent way.
