From crossing signs to loving words spoken from a parent, warnings can come in many different forms, and they can be found all around us.  In the same way that we’re told to not touch a hot stove, oftentimes people give warnings in a hope that we won’t have to learn the hard way.  They’re given with love in the hopes that those that they warn will be able to avoid the danger that some have unfortunately experienced.

In this way Peter had hoped that the church would learn to avoid many of the dangers that often times surround Christians through the writing of the letter known today as 2 Peter.  This letter was written as Peter came to terms with his own mortality; to educate future Christians about the dangers that may arise within their churches after his death.

His main focus is on the idea of false teachers and choosing to follow the advice of those who may not have Christians or Christ’s best intentions in mind.  False teachers come in many forms and can be influential in many ways.  Peter warns us of those who focus specifically on money, do as they please, and speak poorly against the word of God.

As you read this book, as yourself: what warnings have you followed in your life that have gotten you out of trouble in your life?  Though we may not always follow the advice that’s given to us, sometimes we have to understand that these warnings come from a place of honest love and pure intentions.  Peter’s advice is sound; to remain devoted to the Bible’s teaching and to not stray away from what we know to be right through the word of God.  Through the heeding of his warnings, we’ll continue to pursue Christ and exhibit truth to those around us.
