The Treasures Of Psalm 23Sample
The Lord is your shepherd!
“The Lord is my shepherd.” (the Bible, Psalm 23:1)
These words introduce this psalm that David wrote, undoubtedly a text that has touched one of the greatest numbers of people in the world. I pray that its message is an extraordinary source of blessing for you.
This psalm speaks of the Lord, also called the Everlasting God, the Almighty God. King David introduces Him here as his shepherd.
Before becoming king, David himself was a shepherd. He knows that a shepherd has a special love for each of his sheep. He knows that in the middle of the darkest night, the shepherd never hesitates to go after and rescue a sheep that is lost, hurt, or in danger.
David risked his life to defend his flock against predators. One day, speaking of his sheep to King Saul, he said,
“‘When a lion or a bear came and took a lamb out of the flock, I went out after it and struck it, and delivered the lamb from its mouth.’” (the Bible, 1 Samuel 17:34-35)
He knows that a shepherd knows each of his sheep individually and that he loves each one of them specifically.
For David, there is no doubt: God is his shepherd. A good shepherd. The best of shepherds. The divine shepherd. The Shepherd of shepherds!
David considers himself to be like a sheep, dependent on his shepherd. A sheep is not equipped with fangs; it has no means of defense apart from its shepherd. And this is all it needs to feel secure.
Jesus said, “‘The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly. I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep...I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own. As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep.’” (the Bible, John 10:10-15)
Jesus is the ultimate shepherd. He knows you, my friend. He gave His life for you because you are His precious sheep. He loves you passionately!
