Anachronism: Beauty & The Arts

DAY 4 OF 4

Renewed in Knowledge

Colossians 3:8-10

Through these last days, we have seen that the love of Beauty is ours because it was first God’s. We have explored God’s mandate to his creatures to produce beautiful things. We also saw how Truth and Beauty are intimately connected. Thus, while we may readily appreciate the works of the theologian, the philosopher, and the scientist each devoted to a pursuit of Truth, we see also that the works of the artist are an important pursuit for those who would fully express the image of God. As Christians, it is central to our walk that we continually strive to be perfect as our Heavenly Father is perfect (Matthew 5:48). Fully expressing His image is a central responsibility for every Christian, not to mention a joy and delight as we become more Christ-like. A key part of fulfilling this responsibility is to be thoughtful and purposeful in our pursuit and understanding of Beauty in this life as we prepare to behold His eternal Beauty in heaven.

As Francis Schaffer points out in his book, Art and the Bible, Christians ought to see the arts "as things of beauty to the praise of God." When we better know God, through the reading and teaching of His Word; when we spend time in His Creation, experiencing and appreciating what He considers beautiful, we become more able to appreciate the echoes of His perfect Beauty in the works of His image-bearers. And if you are a Christian who feels called to create art, do so with the confidence that you are helping others to more fully express the image of God in others .

Prayer: Father, thank you for gifting us with your Image. Help us to fully express your image in this lifetime, especially by pursuing and appreciating that which is Truly Beautiful. Amen.

Music: Exuberance

Psalm 103

The piano and the strings begin with a swirl of dancing humor and joyfulness as the piece sparkles, although a few moments of more serious intensity cast a fleeting shadow on the merriment reflecting the complicated tapestry of life.
