Jesus’ father, his earthly father, was a carpenter...a builder. Working with wood and stone.
A true craftsman. He had the instinct to know how to build. How to repair. How to fit broken pieces together to be strong. Stronger than they were before.
As a good Jewish father, he would have started early teaching his son the family craft. Jesus would have learned early what it meant to build and restore.
So too His heavenly father. The creator. And restorer. Of wood, of stone, of hearts, and souls.
Is there some part of you in need of repair? Have you been suffering for a while and feel the need for restoration?
This meditation from the 5th chapter of 1st Peter will help you visit this carpenter. A walk through his shop. A space to encounter the divine presence of God as you face the divine tension of whether you can ever be restored.
Using your divine imagination and creativity for a moment. Return to Joseph’s shop. Watch him training Jesus. Teaching Jesus to build, restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish all that He touches. Feel the sawdust on the floor, listen to them working, what do you see in Jesus’ eyes? Relish the moment.
Today you have the opportunity to experience healing. To be repaired. To be made whole again. Expect to see something broken today. Let it remind you of Him repairing you, shaping you, and creating you.
Let me pray that after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace who imparts His blessing and favor, who called you to His own eternal glory in Christ, will Himself complete, confirm, strengthen, and establish you making you what you ought to be. Amen.
