After Pentecost: The Disciples Deployed

DAY 3 OF 20

Courage in Conflict

Peter and John refused to be intimidated by the formal assemblage of rulers, elders, scribes, and members of the high-priestly family. When confronted, they did not apologize for doing what God had called them to do. They did not beg for mercy or try to cut deals. They did not change their message or soften it to appease their audience. They simply answered the questions they were asked and took the opportunity they were given to advance the truth of the Gospel, pulling no punches, but naming Jesus as the only One able to save people from the consequences of their sin.

Jesus’ earlier instructions had prepared Peter and John for just such an occasion. When the time of reckoning came and Peter and John were called before the Jewish authorities to defend themselves, they chose to fear God over men and relied on the Holy Spirit to tell them what to say and when to say it. Well-trained, they demonstrated the same calm confidence before their accusers that Jesus had displayed before the week of His crucifixion—a scene Peter had personally witnessed.

Later, Peter encouraged followers of Christ to prepare themselves for questioning and potential persecution by establishing Jesus as their ultimate authority in their hearts and minds and making the advancement of the Gospel their number one priority. Because Peter did this consistently throughout his ministry, his words to the early Church carried considerable weight and credibility. They still do.

What about you? Whom do you fear most, man or God? Do your actions prove it? When challenged for your faith or questioned about the Gospel, do you advance the truth of God’s Word?  When you challenge others to obedience, do your words carry weight? Are you a credible source of spiritual wisdom?

About this Plan

After Pentecost: The Disciples Deployed

Because Peter and the other apostles knew Jesus not only as Savior, but also as teacher, leader, mentor, and friend, they became effective leaders in the early Church drawing continually on Jesus’ words, the example He set, and the experience they gained under His earthly leadership to advance God’s Kingdom by advancing the Gospel.
