2 Peter: Faith In A Skeptical World

DAY 4 OF 30

(focuses especially on vv. 5–6)

If we read verses 5–7 without first studying verses 1–4, we might make the mistake of thinking that our transformation will come through pure grit and willpower. God’s grace is ours through our faith and knowledge of Christ, and now God is powerfully working within our minds and wills to transform us into His divine likeness. God is now on our side, or perhaps it’s better to say we’re now on His side, in the pursuit of godliness.

While we are now clearly on the winning (divine) side, and know that victory is ours in Christ, Peter assures us that we are not to be passive in our transformation. We are to eagerly cooperate.

But what should we focus on? What does the path ahead of us look like? What traits does he want us to pursue?

Upon the foundation of our faith (already mentioned in v. 1), Peter urges us to ‘make every effort’ (v. 5) to add to our faith, goodness (or virtue, or moral excellence). You could take a few minutes to consider people you know who exemplify the Bible’s description of what is virtuous and good. Christians are to be that way.

Besides goodness, Peter again stresses the importance of knowledge (v. 5). It is knowledge of God and biblical truth, but it also extends into wisdom more generally (as in 1 Peter 3:7, where he urges men to be ‘considerate’ of their wives). Do your daily habits reveal you as someone interested in God’s view of things, or are you being malformed by the values of the world?

While pursuing knowledge, Peter urges self-control (v. 6). It’s one of the least-valued fruits of the Spirit, but is the ability to have mastery over your actions, appetites, words and thoughts. If you are not in control of your behaviour, who is? Obesity, sexual sin, alcoholism, and the constant pursuit of ‘more’ wealth, clothing, or new gadgets are a few common examples. Does your family suffer your short temper? With whom, or in what situations, does your lack of self- control show itself?

Self-control must be sustained to be of much value, so Peter includes ‘perseverance’ (v. 6). The Christian’s walk is often a long one, and may not feel very victorious. We keep sight of Jesus while pressing on, one step in front of the other.

Reflection

How could you develop one of these precious traits? In the coming years and decades, how will you, while relying on God, be someone who cultivates each of them?

About this Plan

2 Peter: Faith In A Skeptical World

Your faith is precious! So often, though, we can feel weak,  irrelevant and marginalized. Living in a skeptical world where truth is twisted and false teaching abounds isn’t easy. Peter knew about the challenges of living in such a world, but he also knew Jesus deeply,  and he was utterly convinced of the importance of trusting Jesus and living for Him. Bible teacher David Burge delves into this letter and highlights relevant applications for our lives today. Be reminded of the truth about Jesus, motivated to continue to trust him and equipped for living in a skeptical world with these thirty undated devotions.
