Christians are weird, we are strange, we are bizarre…and that’s a beautiful thing. I grew up in a Christian household - heavily involved in the church – and I continually thought that my parents, their friends, and a lot of the people I ran into at church were SO WEIRD! Their jokes were different than the ones me and my buddies at school told, they smiled a whole lot for no apparent reason, and they were relentlessly committed to serving other people with zero concern for whether or not it would be reciprocated. Weird, weird people!

And yet, that is exactly what Peter calls every Christian to be…to be strange. Specifically, he opens his letter to the 1st Century Christians and calls them “strangers in the world.” This is a reminder to them that they do not fit in here, because this place is not their actual home. As Christians, we live our lives aware that we are just visiting here, and the vast expanse of eternity will be spent somewhere much different…where we will fit in…perfectly! Until then, Peter will outline some very practical and encouraging teachings telling us that this weird lifestyle is totally worth it, and if we will lean into the weirdness, we will actually begin to find the freedom that Jesus designed for us to live within.
