Together in the Race
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. —Hebrews 12:1 (NLT)
Imagine yourself in a relay race and you know the end is close.
You and your team press on—racing through mud, climbing walls, army-crawling beneath wires and swimming across a lake to reach the finish line. Can you feel the elation as you cross that finish line and celebrate with the same teammates you trained alongside? You high five, dance and laugh together.
You might not enjoy running or obstacle courses, but it’s a great analogy for our time on earth. Notice that the author of Hebrews says, “... since we are surrounded by such a huge cloud of witnesses to the life of faith … let us run,” understanding that this particular race—the Christian life—and its training are best accomplished together in godly community.
Sure, it’s not always possible to be literally shoulder to shoulder with all believers. After all, we live separate lives, work at different jobs and worship at various churches.
But Christ connects us all as we live out His global mission to “go and make disciples of all the nations” (Matt. 28:19, NLT).
So even if we’ve never met them, right now we’re connected to people around the world who hunger for Scripture in their own language; we’re related by the blood of Christ to men and women near and far who are sharing the gospel.
As believers, we need each other. Because we are in this together.
Points to Ponder:
- Who is a part of your community of believers?
- What kind of impact has community had on your walk with Christ?
- How can you foster “togetherness” with God’s global church?
