Devotional: Our Father Who Provides Rewards
God revealed Himself to Abraham as a provider when he was asked to offer up his son, Isaac. Abraham knew God as Jehovah Jireh, “the Lord will provide” (Genesis 22:14). Sometimes we also have to offer up our “Isaac” to see God’s provision (Matthew 6:8, 26, 30, James 1:17). In this world, we often only get rewarded when we have performed well, while we should be rewarded more for our effort and participation. That would cause us to value effort and not only successes and performances (Matthew 11:30, 1 Peter 5:7).
Testimony:
The story is told of a man who used to beg on the streets of New York. He slept in a shelter which cost $4 per night and spent his days on the streets. When he died, the police found $50 000 in a money belt on his body. It seems crazy that someone with such riches would choose to live like a beggar. Unfortunately, this is true of the spiritual life of many Christians.
Take a moment to think about God’s provision. Think of some of the things God has done in your life:
- Ways He has forgiven you
- Ailments He has healed you from
- Ways he has shown His love toward you
- Ways He has provided for you
Once you have done this, give God worship, thanksgiving and praise for what He has done in your life. Build a memorial to what God has done by celebrating with your friends or taking communion.
Reflective questions:
- In what areas is your faith being tested at the moment?
- What are some of the “Isaacs” that you must lay down- e.g. dreams, ambitions, relationships?
- Do you fear not being provided for by God or others?
