These verses could be written about most of the students on campus all around you and even about you. Most students are there to learn something. If it’s not the academic pursuit that drives them, then they are there for the “college experience” which is often filled with folly and madness! The Teacher sought to know both the good qualities of wisdom and knowledge and for good measure he sought to know the full depth of madness and folly. He studied hard and partied hard. I know a few students who are like that too! The result of this effort was just like the pursuit of the labors of man under the sun, all is meaningless. If you make the accumulation of knowledge and even wisdom the goal of your life, you will find yourself no less fulfilled. In fact, the Teacher says he found it to be worse because you are smart enough to know the inequalities of the world without having the ability to fix the issues that cause them. The goal of life cannot be the mere learning of the facts or even becoming wise in the ways of the world. This too will leave us longing for more.
