Wisdom to Solve Problems
I have heard that you are able to give interpretations and to solve difficult problems… - Dan 5:16
King Belshazzar had heard from his queen that Daniel was a wise man who could interpret dreams and solve difficult problems. Daniel’s reputation went before him because he stood apart from all others in terms of his wisdom. The king knew that Daniel’s extraordinary wisdom had something to do with the God he served. In those days, it was known that wisdom was a gift from God. Even to this day that is true. Even when the world does not believe in God, they have a hunger to learn from those who possess wisdom.
In our postmodern world, knowledge is equated with wisdom and it is seen as something that can be acquired through one’s own effort. But there is a big difference between the two. Knowledge is information and facts acquired through experience and education. Wisdom, on the other hand, is discernment between right and wrong. Daniel had knowledge. But there were others in Belshazzar’s kingdom that possessed knowledge. However, Daniel stood apart from all the others in terms of his wisdom. Hence, the king relied on him for answers to his problems. This gave Daniel proximity to the king and a unique platform to serve God and His people.
The world is seeking people with true wisdom. There are many who have accumulated vast amounts of knowledge. But few can say that they have acquired wisdom. So much of what is peddled as wisdom is simply trite and shallow words. What is the path to acquiring wisdom? Daniel gives us insights into how wisdom is gained. Daniel declares that his wisdom was from God. (2:19-23)
The good news is that we, as followers of Christ, have the same advantage as Daniel to acquire the wisdom that God freely gives to all who ask. True wisdom is available to us through God’s Word (Ps 19:7), through Jesus Christ (Col 2:3), and through His Spirit. (I Cor 2:6-16)
Lord, give me the wisdom that I need to solve the problems that I face and those of others who seek my help. Amen
About this Plan
Anybody can solve a problem, but it takes God’s wisdom and direction to solve it His way. Our finiteness and inability are factors to seek His dependence. While He urges us to realize that problems are transient, He encourages us to be prepared to solve problems.
