         <div class="label">31</div><div class="p"><span class="content">  </span><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="2CH.31.1"><span class="label">1</span><span class="content">When all this had ended, the Israelites who were there went out to the towns of Judah, smashed the sacred stones and cut down the Asherah poles. They destroyed the high places and the altars throughout Judah and Benjamin and in Ephraim and Manasseh. After they had destroyed all of them, the Israelites returned to their own towns and to their own property.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Contributions for Worship</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="2CH.31.1"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="2CH.31.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">Hezekiah assigned the priests and Levites to divisions&#8212;each of them according to their duties as priests or Levites&#8212;to offer burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, to minister, to give thanks and to sing praises at the gates of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">&#8217;s dwelling. </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="2CH.31.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">The king contributed from his own possessions for the morning and evening burnt offerings and for the burnt offerings on the Sabbaths, at the New Moons and at the appointed festivals as written in the Law of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">. </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="2CH.31.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">He ordered the people living in Jerusalem to give the portion due the priests and Levites so they could devote themselves to the Law of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">. </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="2CH.31.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">As soon as the order went out, the Israelites generously gave the firstfruits of their grain, new wine, olive oil and honey and all that the fields produced. They brought a great amount, a tithe of everything. </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="2CH.31.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">The people of Israel and Judah who lived in the towns of Judah also brought a tithe of their herds and flocks and a tithe of the holy things dedicated to the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> their God, and they piled them in heaps. </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="2CH.31.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">They began doing this in the third month and finished in the seventh month. </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="2CH.31.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">When Hezekiah and his officials came and saw the heaps, they praised the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> and blessed his people Israel.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="2CH.31.8"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="2CH.31.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">Hezekiah asked the priests and Levites about the heaps; </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="2CH.31.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">and Azariah the chief priest, from the family of Zadok, answered, &#8220;Since the people began to bring their contributions to the temple of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">, we have had enough to eat and plenty to spare, because the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> has blessed his people, and this great amount is left over.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="2CH.31.10"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="2CH.31.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">Hezekiah gave orders to prepare storerooms in the temple of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">, and this was done. </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="2CH.31.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">Then they faithfully brought in the contributions, tithes and dedicated gifts. Konaniah, a Levite, was the overseer in charge of these things, and his brother Shimei was next in rank. </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="2CH.31.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">Jehiel, Azaziah, Nahath, Asahel, Jerimoth, Jozabad, Eliel, Ismakiah, Mahath and Benaiah were assistants of Konaniah and Shimei his brother. All these served by appointment of King Hezekiah and Azariah the official in charge of the temple of God.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="2CH.31.13"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="2CH.31.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">Kore son of Imnah the Levite, keeper of the East Gate, was in charge of the freewill offerings given to God, distributing the contributions made to the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> and also the consecrated gifts. </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="2CH.31.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">Eden, Miniamin, Jeshua, Shemaiah, Amariah and Shekaniah assisted him faithfully in the towns of the priests, distributing to their fellow priests according to their divisions, old and young alike.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="2CH.31.15"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="2CH.31.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">In addition, they distributed to the males three years old or more whose names were in the genealogical records&#8212;all who would enter the temple of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> to perform the daily duties of their various tasks, according to their responsibilities and their divisions. </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="2CH.31.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">And they distributed to the priests enrolled by their families in the genealogical records and likewise to the Levites twenty years old or more, according to their responsibilities and their divisions. </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="2CH.31.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">They included all the little ones, the wives, and the sons and daughters of the whole community listed in these genealogical records. For they were faithful in consecrating themselves.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="2CH.31.18"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="2CH.31.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">As for the priests, the descendants of Aaron, who lived on the farm lands around their towns or in any other towns, men were designated by name to distribute portions to every male among them and to all who were recorded in the genealogies of the Levites.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="2CH.31.19"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="2CH.31.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">This is what Hezekiah did throughout Judah, doing what was good and right and faithful before the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> his God. </span></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="2CH.31.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">In everything that he undertook in the service of God&#8217;s temple and in obedience to the law and the commands, he sought his God and worked wholeheartedly. And so he prospered.</span></span></div>

data-usfm="ISA.15.1"><span class="content">Kir in Moab is ruined,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="ISA.15.1"><span class="content">destroyed in a night!</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="ISA.15.1"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="ISA.15.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">Dibon goes up to its temple,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="ISA.15.2"><span class="content">to its high places to weep;</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="ISA.15.2"><span class="content">Moab wails over Nebo and Medeba.</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v2" class="fq">Dimon</span><span class="ft">, a wordplay on </span><span class="fq">Dibon </span><span class="ft">(see verse 2), sounds like the Hebrew for </span><span class="fq">blood</span><span class="content"> says: &#8220;Within three years, as a servant bound by contract would count them, Moab&#8217;s splendor and all her many people will be despised, and her survivors will be very few and feeble.&#8221;</span></span></div>

         <div class="p"><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="2KI.17.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">But the king of Assyria discovered that Hoshea was a traitor, for he had sent envoys to So</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">17:4 </span><span class="fq">So </span><span class="ft">is probably an abbreviation for </span><span class="fqa">Osorkon.</span></span></span><span class="content"> king of Egypt, and he no longer paid tribute to the king of Assyria, as he had done year by year. Therefore Shalmaneser seized him and put him in prison. </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="2KI.17.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">The king of Assyria invaded the entire land, marched against Samaria and laid siege to it for three years. </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="2KI.17.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">In the ninth year of Hoshea, the king of Assyria captured Samaria and deported the Israelites to Assyria. He settled them in Halah, in Gozan on the Habor River and in the towns of the Medes.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Israel Exiled Because of Sin</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="2KI.17.6"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="2KI.17.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">All this took place because the Israelites had sinned against the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> their God, who had brought them up out of Egypt from under the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt. They worshiped other gods </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="2KI.17.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">and followed the practices of the nations the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> had driven out before them, as well as the practices that the kings of Israel had introduced. </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="2KI.17.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">The Israelites secretly did things against the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> their God that were not right. From watchtower to fortified city they built themselves high places in all their towns. </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="2KI.17.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">They set up sacred stones and Asherah poles on every high hill and under every spreading tree. </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="2KI.17.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">At every high place they burned incense, as the nations whom the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> had driven out before them had done. They did wicked things that aroused the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">&#8217;s anger. </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="2KI.17.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">They worshiped idols, though the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> had said, &#8220;You shall not do this.&#8221;</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">17:12 </span><span class="ft"><span class="ref" data-usfm="EXO.20.4">Exodus 20:4</span>,<span class="ref" data-usfm="EXO.20.5">5</span></span></span></span><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="2KI.17.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">The </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> warned Israel and Judah through all his prophets and seers: &#8220;Turn from your evil ways. Observe my commands and decrees, in accordance with the entire Law that I commanded your ancestors to obey and that I delivered to you through my servants the prophets.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="2KI.17.13"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="2KI.17.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">But they would not listen and were as stiff-necked as their ancestors, who did not trust in the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> their God. </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="2KI.17.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">They rejected his decrees and the covenant he had made with their ancestors and the statutes he had warned them to keep. They followed worthless idols and themselves became worthless. They imitated the nations around them although the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> had ordered them, &#8220;Do not do as they do.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="2KI.17.15"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="2KI.17.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">They forsook all the commands of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> their God and made for themselves two idols cast in the shape of calves, and an Asherah pole. They bowed down to all the starry hosts, and they worshiped Baal. </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="2KI.17.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">They sacrificed their sons and daughters in the fire. They practiced divination and sought omens and sold themselves to do evil in the eyes of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">, arousing his anger.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="2KI.17.17"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="2KI.17.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">So the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> was very angry with Israel and removed them from his presence. Only the tribe of Judah was left, </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="2KI.17.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">and even Judah did not keep the commands of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> their God. They followed the practices Israel had introduced. </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="2KI.17.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">Therefore the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> rejected all the people of Israel; he afflicted them and gave them into the hands of plunderers, until he thrust them from his presence.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="2KI.17.20"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="2KI.17.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">When he tore Israel away from the house of David, they made Jeroboam son of Nebat their king. Jeroboam enticed Israel away from following the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> and caused them to commit a great sin. </span></span><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="2KI.17.22"><span class="label">22</span><span class="content">The Israelites persisted in all the sins of Jeroboam and did not turn away from them </span></span><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="2KI.17.23"><span class="label">23</span><span class="content">until the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> removed them from his presence, as he had warned through all his servants the prophets. So the people of Israel were taken from their homeland into exile in Assyria, and they are still there.</span></span></div>

         <div class="p"><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="2KI.18.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">In King Hezekiah&#8217;s fourth year, which was the seventh year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, Shalmaneser king of Assyria marched against Samaria and laid siege to it. </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="2KI.18.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">At the end of three years the Assyrians took it. So Samaria was captured in Hezekiah&#8217;s sixth year, which was the ninth year of Hoshea king of Israel. </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="2KI.18.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">The king of Assyria deported Israel to Assyria and settled them in Halah, in Gozan on the Habor River and in towns of the Medes. </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="2KI.18.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">This happened because they had not obeyed the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> their God, but had violated his covenant&#8212;all that Moses the servant of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> commanded. They neither listened to the commands nor carried them out.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="2KI.18.12"><span class="content">  </span></span></div>
