Strategy For The Struggle

DAY 31 OF 32

A Glorious Mystery

I enjoy a good animal documentary. Especially one with David Attenborough. I just love his passion and how he could find all animals fascinating. From dangerous beasts to insignificant bugs!

When it comes to Proverbs 30 though, I’ve always found it strange that there were so many animal Proverbs in the Bible…  Ants and locust, lions and eagles…. Huh?

For example in Proverbs‬ ‭30:24-28‬ ‭(CSB)

“Four things on earth are small, yet they are extremely wise: ants are not a strong people, yet they store up their food in the summer; hyraxes are not a mighty people, yet they make their homes in the cliffs; locusts have no king, yet all of them march in ranks; a lizard can be caught in your hands, yet it lives in kings’ palaces.”

‬‬

As I read this, I get the impression that the writer had limited understanding of these creatures. How is it that locusts move in rank, yet they have no king? A total mystery!

It got me thinking about how we don’t question the “everyday mysteries” around us. I’ve never heard people debating lizards around the dinner table or arguing about how it could be possible for ants to be so strong. We simply accept those things without question.

And yet, I been privy many conversations, where debates over the impossibility of Jesus being fully God and fully man rage… or conversations where the “bizarre idea” of the Holy Spirit leads to much frustration and no conclusion.

How is it that we are willing to accept things we do not understand in the physical and yet we cannot seem to accept things we cannot understand in the spiritual? Would my walk with God be better if I could fully comprehend the bigness of who God is or how the universe was made or what heaven will be like? I doubt it!

I think some of the mystery and the depth of God is the exact thing that leaves me hungry for more. I want to know the height and the depth and the breadth of the kingdom of God. I want His deep mysteries to be unraveled and whispered to me. And day-by-day it happens. But only on THAT day when I come face-to-face with my saviour will I really FULLY understand. Until then, I’m happy to say that I’m on the journey, and even if I don’t have all the answers… there’s no other journey I’d rather take!

“God wanted to make known among the Gentiles the glorious wealth of this MYSTERY, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.”

‭‭Colossians‬ ‭1:27‬ (CSB)

Indeed a glorious mystery!
