Wilderness Survival Guide

DAY 2 OF 7

SURVIVAL TIP #2 —ASSESS YOUR SITUATION

Those stranded in the wilderness must evaluate their resources. If we were lost in the wilderness, our odds of survival would drastically improve if we possessed a few basic supplies like food, water, a knife, or matches. This is also true for the spiritual wilderness. The resources God provides for spiritual life are the Word of God, the fellowship of the saints, and the comfort of the Holy Spirit.

God’s Word is an oasis of truth in any spiritual desert and doesn’t depend on circumstances to be effective. This allows us to live and speak from our heart and not from our circumstances. “Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You” (Psalm 119:11). In the wilderness God’s Word puts everything in perspective.

With the fellowship of the saints, the wilderness becomes an expedition; God means for us to travel together. That is the nature of the Body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:26). So, during seasons of adversity, we need the strength of our spiritual family to help carry its weight. “Bear one another’s burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2).

Finally, who is a more faithful comrade in the wilderness than the Holy Spirit? The living God, in the Person of the Holy Spirit, is going before you, walking beside you, guarding behind you, resting upon you, and dwelling within you. The greater our revelation of the Holy Spirit’s presence, the greater our comfort which enables us to maintain our joy and character in the wilderness through the pain and the trial.
