DAY 3: WAS THAT REALLY NECESSARY?
How cool would it have been to walk with Jesus and watch all of the things He did in the three years of His ministry? The miracles, the teachings, the super amazing and the incredibly weird. I ask myself every time I read the gospels, would I have continued to follow when He did the weird things? Teaching on eating His flesh and drinking His blood (John 6:56), which we now know is about communion, His death and resurrection. Those there wouldn’t have known that; all they heard was ‘eat my flesh and drink my blood’ – would I have stayed following Jesus? Does my faith and discipleship have boundaries?.
The gospels reveal the way to some miracles is through the completely absurd, offending my logical brain, my sense of normality, but causing simply miraculous results. Smith Wigglesworth kicked babies to parents, who caught their completely healed child. But stop the clock mid-way through the miracle and you might walk out because ‘this is just way too weird’. Now, I am not condoning kicking babies for healing – don’t do that one in the street! What about this miracle? If the Holy Spirit said to you, ‘Put your fingers into his ears, spit and touch the man’s tongue, say “Be opened” and the man will be healed’, would you? Was Jesus offending their minds to reveal their hearts? The next verse tells us they were overwhelmed and amazed once the man was healed, but I’m sure they were shocked and perplexed in the middle of the miracle.
Be encouraged today, Jesus doesn’t always take the normal road to give you a miracle. It may be not what you expected, it may mean doing something that is beyond your thoughts or your sense of ‘how it should be done!’, but trust that Jesus knows best and do it anyway!
