Jesus Defeated Loneliness for You
Jesus’ death shows us that He knows and cares about our loneliness. He loved us enough to enter our pain, to show us how far he was willing to go, but he did more than just die. He resurrected as well. Now, not only does he understand our loneliness, but we can trust in Him to defeat it.
Three days after Jesus’ death, two women walked to his tomb, but he was not there. Instead, they saw an angel who told them the good news. “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here, for his has risen from the dead”(Matthew 28:5-6).
Jesus’ defeat of death reminds us that He solves our problems, not just understands them. After his resurrection, he spent some time preaching and equipping His disciples to take the gospel message to all nations, and at the end of his earthly ministry, he returned to His heavenly community. His mission was done. Humanity was saved, and he could now be reunited with His Father and the Spirit. As he’s risen up to Heaven, he reminds us that He is coming back to fully restore all things.
This ascension into heaven at the end of Jesus’ life models the redemptive work he does in us. We, like him, experienced separation from the perfect community. He, like us, experienced the loneliness that comes with that separation, but He, unlike us, could do something about it. Because of Christ and His Spirit that now lives in us, we get to partake in that perfect community that we so long for simply by trusting in Him. While we will not realize the fullness of this community until Christ returns or calls us home, we do not have to wait for that to experience it.
The scriptures for today show us how Christ has modeled the reunion that comes from His resurrection. As you read them, praise God for providing a cure to our loneliness.
