UNCHANGING TRUTH
Can you imagine playing your favorite sport while the referees randomly change the rules during the game? You’re moving the ball down the field or court, and suddenly the whistle blows and you are informed that the rule is now you must walk on your hands when in possession of the ball. So, you adapt to that, manage to score a goal, and the whistle blows again – the ref runs up and informs you that you just scored for the other team because every third minute of every period the goals switch without warning. At the end of the most frustrating game of your life, you find that the score is 309.6 to 4, because it’s also a “multiply by the square root of your favorite player’s number” game this week. If you’re anything like me, you’d find a new league to play in the very next day, because it’s impossible to actually play a game when the rules keep changing.
Well, as absurd as that example may seem, it is a pretty clear picture of what life in our culture can be like. What is true or what is right and wrong continues to change without warning. In almost every area of life, our culture has continually redefined what the truth is…and then redefined the previous redefinition. What was good three years ago is now bad. What was true last week is now up for interpretation. For crying out loud, our solar system now only has eight planets because someone decided Pluto doesn't count anymore!!!
As we try to follow Jesus and live our lives the way He calls us to, it would be an impossible task if He kept changing the rules the way our culture does. But that is one of the great things about God – He never changes! That is one of the reasons God made sure His Word (the Bible) was properly translated and preserved for thousands of years so that we could still know what is true. In a world of constant change and confusion, we can rest confident in the fact that God’s word does not change. When everyone around us is trying to keep up with the ever-changing “truth,” we can rely on the never-changing truth that God has laid out in His word. We don’t have to wonder what God wants us to do, because He clearly spells it out for us. God’s Word is like an anchor in a stormy sea – as the water gets rougher and less predictable, the anchor will keep the boat right where the captain wants it to be. But, an anchor only works if you use it, so read the following passages and thank God for being Someone we can count on no matter what is happening in the world around us.
