An Apple A Day

DAY 7 OF 7

Bright eyes

Jesus explains that our eyes are the gateway to our minds and hearts. So it’s wise to watch out for what our eyes are watching – and what our eyes are watching a lot, are a lot of screens.

We live in a screen world, and that’s fine. Moses had stone tablets. We have smart tablets. God calls each new generation from time’s beginning and high tech doesn’t surprise Him (Isaiah 41:4). But whether we’re navigating the digital dimension or sitting around someone’s dining room table, we should be consistently Christ-like in character. You’ve got app icons all over your phone or laptop, right? Our word icon (meaning picture or representation) comes from the Greek word meaning window. Let’s live so that, when people (metaphorically) click on the icon of your life and mine, a window to Jesus opens.

Today’s apple: Stay screen smart

Screen-gazing can result in digital eye strain. Flicker, glare, fuzzy text, viewing distances and screen angles all make your eyes work harder than they do for old-school print-on-paper reading. To stay screen smart, follow the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, take 20 seconds to check out what's going on 20 meters away from you. Also, blink! Your blinking rate halves when you’re staring at a screen, and without regular lubrication, that tired-itchy-scratchy feeling just gets worse.
