Andy Mineo: Living With DoubtSample
INTRO
“The opposite of faith isn’t doubt, it’s when I got it all figured out.” - Andy Mineo, “Clarity” (I: The Arrow, EP)
It is a shame there is so much bad press around doubt. It is hardly spoken of in church and rarely is it seen as a part of the faith journey. Many of us are never honest about our doubts for fear of being criticized or being perceived as “weak.” It seems that being certain and always having the “right answers” is far more attractive than saying “I don’t know” or “I need help.”
But what would be the point of faith if we never had doubt? How could we receive answers if we never ask questions?
Mark 9:23 speaks of a man who asked Jesus to heal his son. Jesus said, “anything is possible for those who believe!” And the man said, “I believe, help my unbelief!” I’ve always loved that man’s response because it was honest, humble, and hopeful.
When we come to God with this same attitude, he can use our doubt to grow us, to teach us how to trust more deeply, seek more earnestly, and to walk by faith, not by sight.
This short Bible Plan is not an exhaustive exploration on this topic—it’s a conversation starter, to share some of my wrestles and how I’ve found beauty in the tension of faith and doubt.
“The value of doubt is to keep you open to Gods revelations. If you don’t doubt, you don’t change. If you don’t ask questions, you stay stuck wherever you were.” - Madeline L’Engle
