He distinctly saw an angel of God, who came to him and said, &#8220;Cornelius!&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="ACT.10.3"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="ACT.10.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">Cornelius stared at him in fear. &#8220;What is it, Lord?&#8221; he asked.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="ACT.10.4"><span class="content">The angel answered, &#8220;Your prayers and gifts to the poor have come up as a memorial offering before God. </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="ACT.10.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">Now send men to Joppa to bring back a man named Simon who is called Peter. </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="ACT.10.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">He is staying with Simon the tanner, whose house is by the sea.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="ACT.10.6"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="ACT.10.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">When the angel who spoke to him had gone, Cornelius called two of his servants and a devout soldier who was one of his attendants. </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="ACT.10.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">He told them everything that had happened and sent them to Joppa.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Peter&#8217;s Vision</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="ACT.10.8"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="ACT.10.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">About noon the following day as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the roof to pray. </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="ACT.10.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">He became hungry and wanted something to eat, and while the meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance. </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="ACT.10.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">He saw heaven opened and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners. </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="ACT.10.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">It contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles and birds. </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="ACT.10.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">Then a voice told him, </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;Get up, Peter. Kill and eat.&#8221;</span></span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="ACT.10.13"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="ACT.10.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">&#8220;Surely not, Lord!&#8221; Peter replied. &#8220;I have never eaten anything impure or unclean.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="ACT.10.14"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="ACT.10.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">The voice spoke to him a second time, </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.&#8221;</span></span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="ACT.10.15"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="ACT.10.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">This happened three times, and immediately the sheet was taken back to heaven.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="ACT.10.16"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="ACT.10.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">While Peter was wondering about the meaning of the vision, the men sent by Cornelius found out where Simon&#8217;s house was and stopped at the gate. </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="ACT.10.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">They called out, asking if Simon who was known as Peter was staying there.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="ACT.10.18"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="ACT.10.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">While Peter was still thinking about the vision, the Spirit said to him, &#8220;Simon, three</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">10:19 </span><span class="ft">One early manuscript </span><span class="fqa">two</span><span class="ft">; other manuscripts do not have the number.</span></span></span><span class="content"> men are looking for you. </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="ACT.10.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">So get up and go downstairs. Do not hesitate to go with them, for I have sent them.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="ACT.10.20"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="ACT.10.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">Peter went down and said to the men, &#8220;I&#8217;m the one you&#8217;re looking for. Why have you come?&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="ACT.10.21"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="ACT.10.22"><span class="label">22</span><span class="content">The men replied, &#8220;We have come from Cornelius the centurion. He is a righteous and God-fearing man, who is respected by all the Jewish people. A holy angel told him to ask you to come to his house so that he could hear what you have to say.&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="ACT.10.23"><span class="label">23</span><span class="content">Then Peter invited the men into the house to be his guests.</span></span></div>

Can you tell me where they are grazing their flocks?&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="GEN.37.16"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="GEN.37.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">&#8220;They have moved on from here,&#8221; the man answered. &#8220;I heard them say, &#8216;Let&#8217;s go to Dothan.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="GEN.37.17"><span class="content">So Joseph went after his brothers and found them near Dothan. </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="GEN.37.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">But they saw him in the distance, and before he reached them, they plotted to kill him.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="GEN.37.18"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="GEN.37.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">&#8220;Here comes that dreamer!&#8221; they said to each other. </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="GEN.37.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">&#8220;Come now, let&#8217;s kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns and say that a ferocious animal devoured him. Then we&#8217;ll see what comes of his dreams.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="GEN.37.20"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="GEN.37.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">When Reuben heard this, he tried to rescue him from their hands. &#8220;Let&#8217;s not take his life,&#8221; he said. </span></span><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="GEN.37.22"><span class="label">22</span><span class="content">&#8220;Don&#8217;t shed any blood. Throw him into this cistern here in the wilderness, but don&#8217;t lay a hand on him.&#8221; Reuben said this to rescue him from them and take him back to his father.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="GEN.37.22"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="GEN.37.23"><span class="label">23</span><span class="content">So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe&#8212;the ornate robe he was wearing&#8212; </span></span><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="GEN.37.24"><span class="label">24</span><span class="content">and they took him and threw him into the cistern. The cistern was empty; there was no water in it.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="GEN.37.24"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v25" data-usfm="GEN.37.25"><span class="label">25</span><span class="content">As they sat down to eat their meal, they looked up and saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead. Their camels were loaded with spices, balm and myrrh, and they were on their way to take them down to Egypt.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v25" data-usfm="GEN.37.25"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v26" data-usfm="GEN.37.26"><span class="label">26</span><span class="content">Judah said to his brothers, &#8220;What will we gain if we kill our brother and cover up his blood? </span></span><span class="verse v27" data-usfm="GEN.37.27"><span class="label">27</span><span class="content">Come, let&#8217;s sell him to the Ishmaelites and not lay our hands on him; after all, he is our brother, our own flesh and blood.&#8221; His brothers agreed.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v27" data-usfm="GEN.37.27"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v28" data-usfm="GEN.37.28"><span class="label">28</span><span class="content">So when the Midianite merchants came by, his brothers pulled Joseph up out of the cistern and sold him for twenty shekels</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">37:28 </span><span class="ft">That is, about 8 ounces or about 230 grams</span></span></span><span class="content"> of silver to the Ishmaelites, who took him to Egypt.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v28" data-usfm="GEN.37.28"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v29" data-usfm="GEN.37.29"><span class="label">29</span><span class="content">When Reuben returned to the cistern and saw that Joseph was not there, he tore his clothes. </span></span><span class="verse v30" data-usfm="GEN.37.30"><span class="label">30</span><span class="content">He went back to his brothers and said, &#8220;The boy isn&#8217;t there! Where can I turn now?&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v30" data-usfm="GEN.37.30"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v31" data-usfm="GEN.37.31"><span class="label">31</span><span class="content">Then they got Joseph&#8217;s robe, slaughtered a goat and dipped the robe in the blood. </span></span><span class="verse v32" data-usfm="GEN.37.32"><span class="label">32</span><span class="content">They took the ornate robe back to their father and said, &#8220;We found this. Examine it to see whether it is your son&#8217;s robe.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v32" data-usfm="GEN.37.32"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v33" data-usfm="GEN.37.33"><span class="label">33</span><span class="content">He recognized it and said, &#8220;It is my son&#8217;s robe! Some ferocious animal has devoured him. He married her and made love to her; </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="GEN.38.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">she became pregnant and gave birth to a son, who was named Er. </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="GEN.38.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">She conceived again and gave birth to a son and named him Onan. </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="GEN.38.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">She gave birth to still another son and named him Shelah. It was at Kezib that she gave birth to him.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="GEN.38.5"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="GEN.38.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">Judah got a wife for Er, his firstborn, and her name was Tamar. </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="GEN.38.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">But Er, Judah&#8217;s firstborn, was wicked in the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">&#8217;s sight; so the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> put him to death.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="GEN.38.7"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="GEN.38.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">Then Judah said to Onan, &#8220;Sleep with your brother&#8217;s wife and fulfill your duty to her as a brother-in-law to raise up offspring for your brother.&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="GEN.38.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">But Onan knew that the child would not be his; so whenever he slept with his brother&#8217;s wife, he spilled his semen on the ground to keep from providing offspring for his brother. </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="GEN.38.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">What he did was wicked in the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">&#8217;s sight; so the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> put him to death also.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="GEN.38.10"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="GEN.38.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">Judah then said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, &#8220;Live as a widow in your father&#8217;s household until my son Shelah grows up.&#8221; For he thought, &#8220;He may die too, just like his brothers.&#8221; So Tamar went to live in her father&#8217;s household.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="GEN.38.11"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="GEN.38.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">After a long time Judah&#8217;s wife, the daughter of Shua, died. When Judah had recovered from his grief, he went up to Timnah, to the men who were shearing his sheep, and his friend Hirah the Adullamite went with him.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="GEN.38.12"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="GEN.38.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">When Tamar was told, &#8220;Your father-in-law is on his way to Timnah to shear his sheep,&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="GEN.38.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">she took off her widow&#8217;s clothes, covered herself with a veil to disguise herself, and then sat down at the entrance to Enaim, which is on the road to Timnah. For she saw that, though Shelah had now grown up, she had not been given to him as his wife.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="GEN.38.14"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="GEN.38.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">When Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face. </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="GEN.38.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">Not realizing that she was his daughter-in-law, he went over to her by the roadside and said, &#8220;Come now, let me sleep with you.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="GEN.38.16"><span class="content">&#8220;And what will you give me to sleep with you?&#8221; she asked.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="GEN.38.16"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="GEN.38.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">&#8220;I&#8217;ll send you a young goat from my flock,&#8221; he said.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="GEN.38.17"><span class="content">&#8220;Will you give me something as a pledge until you send it?&#8221; she asked.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="GEN.38.17"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="GEN.38.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">He said, &#8220;What pledge should I give you?&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="GEN.38.18"><span class="content">&#8220;Your seal and its cord, and the staff in your hand,&#8221; she answered. So he gave them to her and slept with her, and she became pregnant by him. </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="GEN.38.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">After she left, she took off her veil and put on her widow&#8217;s clothes again.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="GEN.38.19"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="GEN.38.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">Meanwhile Judah sent the young goat by his friend the Adullamite in order to get his pledge back from the woman, but he did not find her. </span></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="GEN.38.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">He asked the men who lived there, &#8220;Where is the shrine prostitute who was beside the road at Enaim?&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="GEN.38.21"><span class="content">&#8220;There hasn&#8217;t been any shrine prostitute here,&#8221; they said.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="GEN.38.21"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="GEN.38.22"><span class="label">22</span><span class="content">So he went back to Judah and said, &#8220;I didn&#8217;t find her. Besides, the men who lived there said, &#8216;There hasn&#8217;t been any shrine prostitute here.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="GEN.38.22"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="GEN.38.23"><span class="label">23</span><span class="content">Then Judah said, &#8220;Let her keep what she has, or we will become a laughingstock. After all, I did send her this young goat, but you didn&#8217;t find her.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="GEN.38.23"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="GEN.38.24"><span class="label">24</span><span class="content">About three months later Judah was told, &#8220;Your daughter-in-law Tamar is guilty of prostitution, and as a result she is now pregnant.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="GEN.38.24"><span class="content">Judah said, &#8220;Bring her out and have her burned to death!&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="GEN.38.24"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v25" data-usfm="GEN.38.25"><span class="label">25</span><span class="content">As she was being brought out, she sent a message to her father-in-law. &#8220;I am pregnant by the man who owns these,&#8221; she said.
