You aren&#8217;t swayed by others, because you pay no attention to who they are. 17Tell us then, what is your opinion? Is it right to pay the imperial tax#22:17 A special tax levied on subject peoples, not on Roman citizens to Caesar or not?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 18But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, &#8220;You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me? 19Show me the coin used for paying the tax.&#8221; They brought him a denarius, 20and he asked them, &#8220;Whose image is this? And whose inscription?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 21&#8220;Caesar&#8217;s,&#8221; they replied.</div><div class="p">Then he said to them, &#8220;So give back to Caesar what is Caesar&#8217;s, and to God what is God&#8217;s.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 22When they heard this, they were amazed. So they left him and went away.</div><div class="s1">Marriage at the Resurrection</div><div class="p"> 23That same day the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him with a question. 24&#8220;Teacher,&#8221; they said, &#8220;Moses told us that if a man dies without having children, his brother must marry the widow and raise up offspring for him. 25Now there were seven brothers among us. The first one married and died, and since he had no children, he left his wife to his brother. 26The same thing happened to the second and third brother, right on down to the seventh. 27Finally, the woman died. 28Now then, at the resurrection, whose wife will she be of the seven, since all of them were married to her?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 29Jesus replied, &#8220;You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God. 30At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven. 31But about the resurrection of the dead&#8212;have you not read what God said to you, 32&#8216;I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob&#8217;#22:32 Exodus 3:6? He is not the God of the dead but of the living.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 33When the crowds heard this, they were astonished at his teaching.</div>

 <div class="label">3</div><div class="s1">God&#8217;s Faithfulness</div><div class="p"> 1What advantage, then, is there in being a Jew, or what value is there in circumcision? 2Much in every way! First of all, the Jews have been entrusted with the very words of God.</div><div class="p"> 3What if some were unfaithful? Will their unfaithfulness nullify God&#8217;s faithfulness? 4Not at all! Let God be true, and every human being a liar. As it is written:</div><div class="q1">&#8220;So that you may be proved right when you speak</div><div class="q2">and prevail when you judge.&#8221;#3:4 Psalm 51:4</div><div class="p"> 5But if our unrighteousness brings out God&#8217;s righteousness more clearly, what shall we say? That God is unjust in bringing his wrath on us? (I am using a human argument.) 6Certainly not! If that were so, how could God judge the world? 7Someone might argue, &#8220;If my falsehood enhances God&#8217;s truthfulness and so increases his glory, why am I still condemned as a sinner?&#8221; 8Why not say&#8212;as some slanderously claim that we say&#8212;&#8220;Let us do evil that good may result&#8221;? Their condemnation is just!</div><div class="s1">No One Is Righteous</div><div class="p"> 9What shall we conclude then? Do we have any advantage? Not at all! For we have already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under the power of sin. 10As it is written:</div><div class="q1">&#8220;There is no one righteous, not even one;</div><div class="q2"> 11there is no one who understands;</div><div class="q2">there is no one who seeks God.</div><div class="q1"> 12All have turned away,</div><div class="q2">they have together become worthless;</div><div class="q1">there is no one who does good,</div><div class="q2">not even one.&#8221;#3:12 Psalms 14:1-3; 53:1-3; Eccles. 7:20</div><div class="q1"> 13&#8220;Their throats are open graves;</div><div class="q2">their tongues practice deceit.&#8221;#3:13 Psalm 5:9</div><div class="q1">&#8220;The poison of vipers is on their lips.&#8221;#3:13 Psalm 140:3</div><div class="q2"> 14&#8220;Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.&#8221;#3:14 Psalm 10:7 (see Septuagint)</div><div class="q1"> 15&#8220;Their feet are swift to shed blood;</div><div class="q2"> 16ruin and misery mark their ways,</div><div class="q1"> 17and the way of peace they do not know.&#8221;#3:17 Isaiah 59:7,8</div><div class="q2"> 18&#8220;There is no fear of God before their eyes.&#8221;#3:18 Psalm 36:1</div><div class="p"> 19Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. 20Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God&#8217;s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.</div><div class="s1">Righteousness Through Faith</div><div class="p"> 21But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. 22This righteousness is given through faith in#3:22 Or through the faithfulness of Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, 23for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. 25God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement,#3:25 The Greek for sacrifice of atonement refers to the atonement cover on the ark of the covenant (see Lev. 16:15,16). through the shedding of his blood&#8212;to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished&#8212; 26he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.</div><div class="p"> 27Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. Because of what law? The law that requires works? No, because of the law that requires faith. 28For we maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from the works of the law. 29Or is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles too? Yes, of Gentiles too, 30since there is only one God, who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through that same faith. 31Do we, then, nullify the law by this faith? Not at all! Rather, we uphold the law.</div>

 <div class="label">8</div><div class="s1">Setting Up the Lamps</div><div class="p"> 1The Lord said to Moses, 2&#8220;Speak to Aaron and say to him, &#8216;When you set up the lamps, see that all seven light up the area in front of the lampstand.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 3Aaron did so; he set up the lamps so that they faced forward on the lampstand, just as the Lord commanded Moses. 4This is how the lampstand was made: It was made of hammered gold&#8212;from its base to its blossoms. The lampstand was made exactly like the pattern the Lord had shown Moses.</div><div class="s1">The Setting Apart of the Levites</div><div class="p"> 5The Lord said to Moses: 6&#8220;Take the Levites from among all the Israelites and make them ceremonially clean. 7To purify them, do this: Sprinkle the water of cleansing on them; then have them shave their whole bodies and wash their clothes. And so they will purify themselves. 8Have them take a young bull with its grain offering of the finest flour mixed with olive oil; then you are to take a second young bull for a sin offering.#8:8 Or purification offering; also in verse 12 9Bring the Levites to the front of the tent of meeting and assemble the whole Israelite community. 10You are to bring the Levites before the Lord, and the Israelites are to lay their hands on them. 11Aaron is to present the Levites before the Lord as a wave offering from the Israelites, so that they may be ready to do the work of the Lord.</div><div class="p"> 12&#8220;Then the Levites are to lay their hands on the heads of the bulls, using one for a sin offering to the Lord and the other for a burnt offering, to make atonement for the Levites. 13Have the Levites stand in front of Aaron and his sons and then present them as a wave offering to the Lord. 14In this way you are to set the Levites apart from the other Israelites, and the Levites will be mine.</div><div class="p"> 15&#8220;After you have purified the Levites and presented them as a wave offering, they are to come to do their work at the tent of meeting. 16They are the Israelites who are to be given wholly to me. I have taken them as my own in place of the firstborn, the first male offspring from every Israelite woman. 17Every firstborn male in Israel, whether human or animal, is mine. When I struck down all the firstborn in Egypt, I set them apart for myself. 18And I have taken the Levites in place of all the firstborn sons in Israel. 19From among all the Israelites, I have given the Levites as gifts to Aaron and his sons to do the work at the tent of meeting on behalf of the Israelites and to make atonement for them so that no plague will strike the Israelites when they go near the sanctuary.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 20Moses, Aaron and the whole Israelite community did with the Levites just as the Lord commanded Moses. 21The Levites purified themselves and washed their clothes. Then Aaron presented them as a wave offering before the Lord and made atonement for them to purify them. 22After that, the Levites came to do their work at the tent of meeting under the supervision of Aaron and his sons. They did with the Levites just as the Lord commanded Moses.</div><div class="p"> 23The Lord said to Moses, 24&#8220;This applies to the Levites: Men twenty-five years old or more shall come to take part in the work at the tent of meeting, 25but at the age of fifty, they must retire from their regular service and work no longer. 26They may assist their brothers in performing their duties at the tent of meeting, but they themselves must not do the work. This, then, is how you are to assign the responsibilities of the Levites.&#8221;</div>
