588 BC Under siege there is severe famine and the Chaldeans finally break through. Jerusalem is captured; royals and officials try to flee at night but are caught and taken to face Nebuchadnezzar 100 miles north at Riblah. The princes are slaughtered and Zedekiah blinded. The city is burned, walls broken down and treasure is taken to Babylon. The poorest people are left and given vineyards. A psalmist laments and cries to God for help.
