On being possessed by the Spirit

Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.

Galatians 5:25

Marathon runners are an interesting species of people. When you speak with a marathon runner, you immediately get to realize that these people think differently, talk differently, behave differently, and so on. Marathon runners are possessed by running. They are people who wake up and breathe running throughout the day and night. 

Our Verse of the Day gives us a similar understanding of life as a marathon. The English translations do not carry the emphasis of the original Greek. It would be much better to read, “Be possessed with the Spirit.” Let the Spirit of God take over your whole life– wake up with the Spirit, breathe the Spirit, run with the Spirit, and so on. The Spirit of God must completely take over the being of a Christ-follower. It is only when this happens that a Christian marathoner lives the phrase “run with perseverance the race marked out for you, looking to Jesus.” 

Prayer

Oh Lord Jesus, the lead runner, help me become possessed by the Holy Spirit every second of my run today.
