Break Through : Overcoming Fear And Anxiety

DAY 2 OF 3

Continuing our study on anxiety, today we will look at lack of trust being another root as to why we suffer anxiety.

A survey undertaken by Deloitte in 2019* highlights that millennials are currently suffering from a lack of trust in traditional pillars, like faith leaders, politicians. It continues to unpack the effects on this, one being an unsettled generation. As I read this, I realized how foundational it was to be able to have a trust in a higher authority; how stabilizing it was to have a such a foundation.

For us as His children, Father God offers us that foundation. He is our higher authority without any changing or corruption. Solid, faithful, long-lasting and true.

When John was going through his breakdown, one of the things that was highlighted was his inability to fully trust in the Lord; he trusted only in his own strength. I remember during his illness attending a service where a prophet of the Lord was speaking:

He spoke about the love of the Lord and trusting in Him. I remember him using an example from his own family and how his young son would stand at the top of the stairs and he would be at the bottom. Then his son would leap off the top step flying into his father’s waiting arms. This prophet spoke that we need to be so trusting of our Heavenly Father, to have that absolute trust, that in whatever happens, He will catch us.**

Often, we are anxious because we do not trust that there will be anyone there to catch us – that we will fall. We entertain a lot of ‘what ifs’ thinking that we, and we alone, have to sort it all out, leading to more anxiety. We struggle with trusting that the Lord is there to catch us, to depend on and to lean upon.

The Bible has many, many verses on trust, and I would encourage you to do a Bible study on them. Why not begin with Psalm 22:4-5? Mediate on His words, allow the truth to settle deep with you. Proclaim it in your anxious times, declare it to the ‘principalities’ and ‘powers’ (Ephesians 6:12, NKJV), for God is there for you.

In You our fathers trusted; They trusted and You delivered them. To You they cried out and were delivered; In You they trusted and were not disappointed. (NASB)
