Running From The HeartSample
Faith to Persevere
And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us; fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. (Hebrews 12:1-2)
What happens to your faith when you suffer? My daughter, Rebecca mourned deeply the unexpected death of her youngest brother Alex. Not just any death, but a suicide!
She poured out the ache of her broken heart onto her journal. “Where were you God? Why didn’t you help my brother? I just want my brother back and my family back to how it was! How can I put my faith in you now?”
In the struggle, the athlete in Rebecca knew how to exercise her faith muscles. She ran to God in prayer and found solace in His presence. She wrote, “You are the author of my story and perfecter of my faith....if you’ve allowed my heart to be broken, it must be for an even greater eternal purpose.”
Instead of growing bitter and hardened by her debilitating circumstances, she accepted the race marked out for her. She chose to let the Lord’s sweetness flow from her broken heart; in God’s providence, they were the last eight years of her life on Earth.
Selah
Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight. (Proverbs 3:5-6)
Your days may not always go as you hope, but in whatever you are facing. Train yourself like the athlete. Develop your faith muscles to be fighting fit and run with perseverance the race that God has planned for you.
Passing the Baton:
Accept the race that God has marked out for you. Whatever your faith is up against, learn to run freely in God’s love and call on your life.
Prayer:
Oh Heavenly Father, I don’t understand, but I thank you that you are the Author and the Perfecter of my faith. I ask for strength and courage and grace, to persevere, and I welcome you, Holy Spirit, to fill me afresh today with all that I need to sustain me. I take this leap of faith and offer up my broken heart. Amen.
