Read The Book: Winter Bible PlanSample

Beginnings
Genesis 1
The beginning chapter of the book of “beginnings” has a rhythm to it. Like the methodical beat of a drum, we see God speak into nothing and something happens. The first shards of light... the covering of darkness... the infant waves of water... the catch-in-the-throat beauty of the sky… the gentle firmness of land... the creatures within the sea, and the roaming creatures of the earth. And as if the Grand Musician was performing an encore, the creation of man and woman out of His very own image. There has never been music or prose that has matched this song of creation.
If you’re like me, I approach the new year with nostalgia and longing. Nostalgia over the previous year, which can be encouraging but also one of possible regret. Longing for the new year that brings goals, check-off lists, and a sense of a “clean slate.” But you don’t have to be on this planet long before you realize that the rhythms of our lives and the path to our hopes can be unpredictable and sometimes downright scary. This is why the first chapter of Genesis is a reminder to all of us for the new year.
In the creation account, we learn that God is sovereign over creation and intentional through His creative work. We, on the other hand, are not sovereign and ultimately do not have certainty about even what occurs tomorrow. Let these twin truths bring us humility and deeper trust for the One who can make anything out of nothing.
Dear Lord, do with me whatever You want and wherever You want for not only the new year but for the rest of eternity. Amen.
Family Connection: Spend some time this week as a family admiring all God has created—including each of you! Go on a nature walk and tell your kids that “God is sovereign,” meaning God is in charge of everything!
