Joy: 37-Day Devotional

DAY 10 OF 37

In Matthew 18, we are told by Jesus Himself to “Be like little children”. I think adults, who have experienced the hard knocks of life, could learn a lot by watching little ones. We can learn things like kindness, forgiveness and opening presents. I’ve never met a child too humble or too proud to receive a gift. Often, a present is ripped out of the giver’s hands before the arms are even outstretched and the wrapping paper ripped in shreds because the child is so excited to see what is inside. How many birthday photos have been obstructed by a massive crowd of eager children, unable to stay seated as they anticipate what’s inside? They grab at the paper of their friend’s presents because they are so pumped. There is a reckless abandonment of all manners because the most important thing is that gift.

In Ephesians 2:8, Paul tells us that our salvation is a gift to be received, not earned. My dear brothers and sisters, I urge you to accept this free gift that God has given. The Father is offering you not just life forever, but joy for today. Don’t hesitate. Grab it, rip into it, and enjoy both God’s gift and His smile as you open it.

Dear Father, You are a good God who gives good things. The best gift You have given to us is Your son Jesus. We did not deserve Him, but You gave Him to us so that we could be daughters and sons. For those who do not call You Daddy, help them to believe. Help them to receive this gift You gave without struggle. For those who have already accepted this gift, help us to rest in the power of Your grace and resurrected life. Help us to live life knowing that salvation is a gift that we can grasp without fear of performance or fear of being taken away. May we live life in victory as we honor You in our everyday living, shining hope for the hurting to see that salvation is a gift if only we just believe.
