DAY 1 OF 92

Remember

Joshua 4:1-7

God is the God of second chances! After 40 years, it was now time for the Israelites to claim the promises of God. Parting the waters again, they walked across on dry ground and to memorialize the event, Joshua has them erect a standing stone to serve as a sign for future generations “forever”.

In our hurried world we often don’t take time for reflection because we are focused intently on our future. We move so quickly from one life event to another, taking photos and posting them on various social media sites but actual reflection seems unproductive and a poor use of our limited time. This passage provides a wonderful example of God’s eternal perspective.

One of the advantages of living 60 years is when I reflect on God’s provision, I have many examples, standing stones, that continually build my faith and are a great resource to draw upon in times of difficulty. But more important than building my faith, the telling of God’s provision throughout my life provides a witness to His faithfulness and love. Looking back helps us see God in the present and what a comfort that can be on our journey.

Father, thank you for word that provides us with such great examples of your faithfulness toward your people. Help us to see and remember your workings in our lives and prompt us to remember and share the Good News of a loving God of second chances and the saving grace that comes from your son, Jesus. Amen.

Family Connection: Create a “Reflection Jar”. On small pieces of paper, each person writes down something that God has done in their life. Place the papers in the jar, and set the jar out for everyone to add to as time passes. Once a year, sit down as a family and review what God has done in your lives over the past year.
