Lessons From The Book Of Titus

DAY 2 OF 5

For men 50 and older (and those who love them)—Part 2

If you’ve ever witnessed a baptism, you might have seen a small crowd of people gathered in front of church. When a child is baptized, the parents will often choose a sibling, cousin, or close friend as a godparent. This human tradition is a way to (1) honor someone’s faith and (2) increase the “village” that will help keep this kid close to Christ.

A few years ago, however, a young couple from our church chose a unique godfather for their son, a man named Tom. Tom (and his wife, Pam) are grandparents of two teenagers, yet they were asked to help little Henry grow up to be a strong man of God. Why? Because of the way they live their faith.

Their story makes me think of Paul’s words to Pastor Titus: “Teach the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled, and sound in faith, in love and in endurance” (Titus 2:2). That’s Tom. People respect him. He is sound and healthy in his faith. He loves the love of Jesus, which causes him to seek God in his life. He is not perfect, but he adores the cross and is eager to honor God in all he does.

There are many families that are dying to find good examples to help them raise the next generation to love Jesus. Join me today in asking the Holy Spirit to raise up more believers like Tom and Pam, Christians whose faith is noticed and respected, regardless of their age.
