Mornings With Jesus 2016: 14-Day Reading Plan

DAY 3 OF 14

Jesus, freedom, and the truth are inextricably joined. Jesus promises in the above verse that the truth frees us, and in John 14:6 He states that He, Himself, is the truth when He says, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”

Many people think of truth as binding. We are “bound” by our oath or by the law to do certain things. In this kind of thinking freedom would be considered something outside of our duty to the truth. I love how Jesus turns that idea on its head. In His way of thinking, the truth is Who He is—and Who He is brings us freedom.

Consider this example. A person evades the law of God (and possibly the law of the land) by covering up some addiction—maybe to illegal drugs, sex, alcohol, whatever. He or she thinks they have to continue lying in order to be free to keep the addiction. Jesus comes into that situation and shines the light of truth. For the first time the person no longer hides, but owns the problem and seeks help. By exposing the truth—and walking in it—the person is able to be truly free from the addiction that has held him/her enslaved, truly freed by the Truth Who sets us free. —Gwen Ford Faulkenberry

FAITH STEP: Surrender your hold on anything false—and let Him Who is the Truth take hold of your life today.
