Parents, Principals, Police, and Presidents

In our world, we all have someone above us in a role of authority. Even the U.S. Presidents must answer to Congress and to the American voters. Even the President will answer to God one day for his or her actions! When we have someone above us who guides us and disciplines our behavior, we are more likely to make good choices.

“You’re not the boss of me!” You’ve probably heard a child say these words in defiance. And, if you’re honest, you may even feel that way about the authorities in your life to whom you must answer. We see this warning in Colossians 3:20:“Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the LORD.” This verse reminds you that the Lord is pleased when you obey your parents in everything! God sees goodness and obedience when we choose to honor persons in authority.

Authority Alert: If someone in authority asks you to do anything that could cause you harm, pray and ask God to give you wisdom, and then quickly tell another adult. No one has the right to abuse anyone!

1 Timothy 2:1-4 states: “First, I want you to pray for all people. Ask God to help and bless them. Give thanks for them. Pray for kings. Pray for everyone who is in authority. Pray that we can live peaceful and quiet lives. And pray that we will be godly and holy. This is GOOD, and it pleases God our Savior. He wants all people to be saved. He wants them to come to know the Truth.” 

The Bible tells us to pray for “all those in authority,” not just those with whom we agree and respect.
