5 Keys To a Glorious Prayer LifeSample
Day 2: Lord, Teach Me To Pray
Asking our Heavenly Father to help you build a glorious prayer life is extremely simple. The very first prayer we will pray is so forthright that you might not believe it works. However, I promise you that it does!
Our first assignment is simply to pray what the apostles prayed: “Lord, teach me to pray.”
During His ministry on earth, Jesus was a living demonstration of prayer. He would sometimes pray all night long!
When the disciples saw Jesus praying, they decided they wanted to be like Him. So what did they do? They simply asked Jesus to teach them to pray.
Luke 11:1-4 says:
“Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, 'Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.' So He said to them, 'When you pray, say: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us day by day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one'" (Luke 11:1-4).
I am not trying to say that we should always repeat these exact words, although we certainly should pray this prayer a lot; it's an awesome prayer! But I want you to see that Jesus answered the disciples' request right away. He taught them to pray when they asked—and as soon as they asked!
If Jesus taught the disciples how to pray as soon as they asked Him to do so, He will definitely teach US when we ask!
Therefore, let's stop right now and ask the Lord to teach us how to pray. Here's a short, sample prayer we can use:
“Heavenly Father, I come before You in Jesus' name. Thank You, Father, for Your Word. Thank You for the disciples' example. Thank You for showing me that it's okay to ask You for help, even in this basic area of learning how to pray.
Father, I feel like I don't know how to pray. I need Your help, for Your Word says that without You I can do nothing (John 15:5).
Therefore, Father, would You please teach me how to pray?
Please, Lord, give me Your burden and passion for prayer. Pour out Your Spirit of grace and supplication on me. Help me to pray like Jesus—with power, faith, and passion.
Abba Father, please transform me and my prayer life. Make me a powerful person of prayer like Jesus is, for Your Word says that He ever lives to make intercession for me.
Thank You, Father, for hearing and answering me right now. Thank You for teaching me how to pray. In Jesus' name, amen.”
As the Lord answers your prayer, you will begin feeling Him woo you into your prayer closet.
You will start to sense Him inviting you—drawing you and romancing you—into your private place of prayer. Each time you answer His call, you will notice Him helping you pray.
I believe that you’ll also notice yourself encountering Him more powerfully day by day. Therefore, be sure to spend time every day alone with the Lord in prayer and His Word, for you won't want to miss out on what He has for you!
Developing a glorious prayer life is simple. You've taken the first step and prayed the first prayer, so be sure to check back tomorrow for the next step!
