Better Words, Better Actions: PraiseLive's 30 Day DevotionalSample
Ever since I can remember I have had compassion for the homeless. I know that it’s something that the Lord has broken my heart for. I can recall a couple of specific times that the presence of the Holy Spirit was so strong in my car after I passed a homeless person, I knew I needed to stop and buy them some groceries. As we know, God’s timing is perfect, so it was always as I was coming up to a gas station or grocery store.
In college, I studied abroad a semester in England. Throughout college, I had always worked at least part-time, so I found myself with a lot of downtime and had the opportunity to volunteer. I volunteered at the Nomad Trust Center, a place for people to come for a cup of tea, a warm meal, and a friendly face to converse with. I came to love this place as I got to know the men and women that frequently joined me around the table. I learned about their struggles and accomplishments and why they were living on the street. During this time I was also able to get involved at the church I attended. They served a weekly meal to the homeless; either they could come to the church or we would go to the streets and bring them a meal.
Returning home from this experience I wanted to start my own version of the Nomad Trust Center where I currently live. I wanted the space to be beautiful and not just something that was worn out. I felt that the homeless were worthy to eat and drink off of beautiful plates and cups and they should be able to come into the building and feel welcomed and at home. This dream hasn’t come to pass yet, as I’m waiting on God’s perfect timing. He is always faithful to give us opportunities to practice caring for the less fortunate, the orphans, and the widows.
Reflection Question:
Maybe serving someone living on the streets feels intimidating? Ask Jesus to show you someone who may be a widower, going through a hard time, or maybe someone that is adopting and see how you can come alongside them and help. Ask Jesus if fear is holding you back from doing more.
Praise + Prayer:
Father God,
Break my heart for what breaks Yours. Give me eyes to see and ears to hear those who need assistance. I ask for Your courage and compassion as we step out in the areas that You are calling us to. Thank You, God, that You care for all people and that in Your eyes no one goes unseen. I pray that when I’m being the hands and feet for You, people would encounter Your love and goodness.
Action Idea:
Bring someone a meal or flowers that maybe just lost a loved one or is going through a trying time.
