Day 9

The 747 Principle
Read
Luke 7:36-50
Reflect
When I think of an example in the Bible of someone one who extended an invitation to their home, but then did not offer hospitality, I can't go past Simon the Pharisee. It's clear as you read the interaction that Jesus was actually an unwelcome guest. Simon was not seeking to build a genuine relationship with Jesus or understand who He was with an open heart and mind, but he had ulterior motives. Simon failed to recognise how special the moment was. Maybe Simon was house proud or reputation proud. What is clear is that in the moment he failed to recognise the extraordinary gift that a welcoming hospitality is. At one point, Jesus asks Simon, "Do you see this woman?" Do you really see her, or only your judgement of her? When pride causes us to impress rather than bless, we fail to truly see others, even those we invite into our homes.
There is an extraordinary lesson Jesus teaches in the midst of this dinner - what I call the 747 Principle! Luke 7:47 "... whoever has been forgiven little loves little." When you keep your heart soft to God and recognise how extraordinary His grace and mercy are towards you, it's so much easier to extend love and generosity to others, because you recognise how amazing God's forgiveness towards you is. The woman, who becomes the real focus of this dinner, humbly offers extraordinary generosity. She knows her sins are great, but that the mercy of Jesus is greater. As a consequence, she is forgiven and set free.
Respond
Today recall how great the love and mercy of God is towards you.
Make the decision not to get used to His grace.
Open your heart and your eyes to see others as Jesus sees them.
