Foreigners and Strangers

DAY 1 OF 7

Sold by his brothers, Joseph is a lone foreigner in Egypt, working as a servant, and going through prison time in a foreign land. Despite being a faithful and trusted worker both in Potiphar’s household and prison, everything is against Joseph. At this point, he has been kicked out of his family and, on the margins of Egyptian society, Joseph is forgotten. He doesn’t belong anywhere and there is no-one to call friend or family among the Hebrews or Egyptians.

Ultimately, in a great reversal, Joseph is able to reconcile with his family. Also, though a foreigner, Pharaoh gives him power and authority to govern the Egyptians, and a secure place for the family of Israel to live and prosper in peace.

How does Joseph’s story encourage you?

For those who have been rejected by both family and society, the story of Joseph gives hope that no matter the circumstances, as God’s children, God is using them for good even in generations to come.

Prayer

Sovereign God, thank you that we are loved sons and daughters and valued members of your kingdom through Jesus. Help us to cling to the hope of restoration and trust in your purposes.

Day 2

About this Plan

Foreigners and Strangers

As Christians, many of us are experiencing an increase of hostility from society. Instead of being the majority, we feel like a rejected minority. Let us re-read scripture through the eyes of those who felt like foreigners and strangers. They can show us how they were able to trust and be used by God to extend his kingdom from the margins, often without significant power, authority or influence.
