Is Jesus Your Best Friend?

DAY 8 OF 17

Don’t put your trust in your friends, but in God

Having faithful friends is great. But even our best friends may at some point disappoint us. The prophet Micah was living in a besieged city where human relationships were put to the extreme test. This was such a harsh time that even family members turned into enemies. Micah sighs that “the godly has perished from the earth, and there is no one upright among mankind; they all lie in wait for blood, and each hunts the other with a net.” (Micah 7:2)

In such a context, Micah’s advice to have no confidence in a friend makes perfect sense. But, he continues, there is One whom we can trust under any circumstances. The Lord God will never deceive us; He is the God of our salvation. Psalm 146 is about the same theme: “Put not your trust in princes, in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation … Blessed is he … whose hope is in the Lord his God”.

Of course, we may enjoy human friendships. But our ultimate trust and hope should always be in God.
