DAY 3 OF 5

Think about it. How many times do you have to make a stop at a store before you go home? it’s been a long day, you’re tired, and you’re just starting to drive. Before you know it, you’re headed home when you actually need to be headed in the opposite direction. I don’t know about you, but muscle memory has caused me to do this more times than I’d like to admit.

I share this to say that from a LeaderFit perspective, we have to be willing to step outside the comforts of complacency and “lean into” the possibilities of “behold, I make all things new,” God offers “new mercies every morning,” and “goodness and mercy will follow you all the days of your life.”

LeaderFit is both a spiritual discipline and mindset. I reiterate: LeaderFit is both a spiritual discipline and mindset. One of the most dangerous things we can do as leaders is to have the mindset or posture of “I already know that,” or, “This is the way it’s always been done and will continue to be done.”

If you are reading this and realize you think those thoughts, I want to challenge you to shift your perspective, because you could very well be on the verge of making yourself obsolete. As leaders, each and every one of us have to choose to challenge our norms for the sake of future growth.

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines muscle memory as the ability to repeat a specific muscular movement with improved efficiency and accuracy that is acquired through practice and repetition.

While muscle memory can be a good thing when it comes to reinforcing positive attributes or skills, the principle also can work in a negative direction. If you grew up anything like me, you have heard the adage, “Practice makes perfect.” This statement is drilled into the heads of children, athletes, and pretty much anyone who is trying to improve their competency in a particular area. The challenge with this statement is that it’s not fully accurate. It would be more accurate to say, “Practice makes permanent.”
