Your Manual for Life and Daddy Talks
What would you desire from any new friendship? The first thing you would want is to get to know this person. To know the person, you begin to spend time with them.
Similarly, to build a relationship with God, we need to know Him and spend time with His Word. John 1:1 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
Getting to know the Word (the Bible), is getting to know your Father God. The more you know your God, through His Word, the more His truths become a part of your life.
Get a physical Bible!
The Bible is not just another book, but it is God’s manual for my life. If I choose not to study it, then I choose not to know God’s plan for my life. Now that would be such a blunder!
Having a physical Bible for underlining, note-taking, and personalizing is always better than having a Bible on your phone. Some good translations, to begin with, are ESV (English Standard Version), or NIV (New International Version).
Start by reading about the Gospels (life of Jesus) written in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John in the New Testament. This apart, there are many free online Bible reading plans, devotionals, and apps like YouVersion to help you.
Also, keep a notebook handy. Challenge yourself to read a chapter per day, ask questions, write down what God taught you and ask your best friend (the Holy Spirit) to help you apply what you learned in your life.
Daddy Talks
Apart from reading the Word, spend time in Prayer. Prayer is talking to God and hearing from Him. And you can do that anytime! Just as you don’t need a script to talk to your dad or friends, feel free to pour your heart to Him and He will respond to you.
Studying the Bible and praying must be a part of your everyday life. Find a time and a nice space away from all the distractions, especially your phone, and have your alone time with God. Take the help of the Holy Spirit to make these times consistent and enjoyable – learn a new song, be a part of a Bible plan, sketch a verse you learned, etc.
Don’t feel condemned when you miss your times with God. Remember God’s love for you doesn’t change irrespective of what you do or don’t. It’s just that the more time you spend with God, the more your eyes open to the wonderful heavenly inheritance that belongs to you because of your decision to follow Jesus!
