SWHW Bible Reading Plan: August 2021Sample
Top Takeaway from Audra Haney:
After the consequence of a disobedient decision, my feisty toddler was infuriated. She sharply informed me that when she grows up, her kids will “eat pie all day” and “never get consequences.”
I had to hide my inevitable grin and chuckle.
“Honey, if you still feel that way as a mommy, then I’ll support you. But, I think you’ll change your mind.”
The truth is that while no child understands or likes discipline, we see immense value in it as parents. We see the big picture. We know the protection, guidance, and growth that thoughtful and intentional discipline brings into the life of our children. We long to see them thrive, and we know our discipline will help mature them into responsible, fruitful adults.
And, God reminds us that the same applies to His children.
“My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.” Hebrews 12: 5-6
Even as an adult, discipline is painful. But, discipline is purposeful. And because the Lord is a perfect Father, we need to remember that His discipline is much more than just correction or punishment.
It is also training. A few quick definitions of discipline are: “mold, train, perfect, a field of study, or a pattern of behavior.”
Just a few verses before this reminder, we see that as believers we are called to a rigorous race. A race that requires endurance, focus, commitment, and strength. The truth is, there are spiritual disciplines and mindsets that are vital for the Christian life and that require immense self-control. God must train and discipline us for these.
We are called to lives that require immense strength. And, we must be willing and accepting of God’s training to run with confidence. We have a close Father willing to give us endless wisdom, training, direction, vision, encouragement, and correction for all our days.
I’m sure an Olympic athlete rarely enjoys an arduous training session in the moment. Eating a piece of pie probably sounds like a much more appealing option. But, I’m certain they would say the joy of running their race, being disciplined, and standing on the podium are more than worth it.
Father, thank You for being a loving Father, coach, encourager, trainer, guide, and protector. It’s hard to sit under Your discipline at times, so please help us to keep the right perspective and not lose heart. We know You are refining and strengthening us, not crushing us. We have a race to run, and we know You are cheering us on and giving us endurance for it. Help us to receive Your correction and training as world-class athletes- keeping our eyes on Your perfect Son Jesus and the eternal reward You have for us! Amen.

About this Plan
Using God's Word as the foundation for our conversation, every devotional is written by women in the trenches of faith, family and work; aiming to live for the glory of God and the good of others. There are enough devotions included for a typical 5-day work schedule. We recommend plugging into your local church for the remaining two days of each week.
