SWHW Bible Reading Plan: August 2021

DAY 17 OF 22

Top Takeaway from Somer Phoebus:

I can see my sin. I know my heart is deceitfully wicked. You'll never hear me claim to be righteous or holy or pure or any of those "positive" church words (even though I will forever strive to be).

But I can admit, even knowing the depth of my sin, I struggle with what the book of Ezekiel calls it... straight up whoredom.

We just finished walking through the book of Hosea at my church, and  similar to Ezekiel, we see Israel (and others) compared to a whore over and over and over again.

It's terribly uncomfortable. But it's completely accurate.

When we disobey God, we cheat on God. And when we cheat on God, we defile ourselves like a whore.

We choose the lust of our flesh over the sanctification of our souls.
We choose the pleasures of life over our purpose in life.
We choose the shallow love of people over the deep love of God.
And we choose a dead idol over a God who is living in us.

I don't want to cheat on God. I don't want to trade His love for the cheap, perverted, twisted version the world tries to give me. Satan is crafty; he makes seemingly good things bad for us. And before we know it, we're having an affair with an idol that will never love us back, and we're desperate to leave, but too ashamed to go back.

But our shame is no match for His grace. It will overwhelm us, like a fireman's hose opened up on a small lit match. It doesn't have a chance with God.

He is waiting with open arms to receive us. Not like a human we've cheated on, but like a Holy Father Who sent His Son to die for us so that even when we cheat, we can always come back.

Is it me or is the gospel almost too beautiful to comprehend? Just wow.

Father, forgive me for cheating on You. I choose You. I know You are the only thing that satisfies, and You are all I need. Please open my eyes to the schemes of Satan and make me aware of the idols in my life. You are worth being loyal to. Thank You for being loyal to me first, and when I did not deserve it. I love You, Father. Amen.

About this Plan

SWHW Bible Reading Plan: August 2021

Using God's Word as the foundation for our conversation, every devotional is written by women in the trenches of faith, family and work; aiming to live for the glory of God and the good of others. There are enough devotions included for a typical 5-day work schedule. We recommend plugging into your local church for the remaining two days of each week.
