Truthful and Cleansed
John distinguishes between truth and deception.
Few people believe themselves to be perfect or sinless. And yet, most of us do not believe ourselves to be sinners, either. We often excuse ourselves with statements like, "I am only human," "I make mistakes," "I am not perfect," or "It was not my fault." However, making excuses is dangerous, because God’s grace and mercy are available to the sinner, not to the ones who make excuses for their sin.
Confession is vital to maintaining our relationship with God. To confess our sin is to agree with God on how He views our sin. It does not make room for our excuses or explanations. Confession is an ongoing activity because our sin is not a one-time activity. Our confession is to be specific and personal, and not some general statements. Be truthful. God will keep His side of the bargain. He will forgive and cleanse us.
Are you living in truth or deception? What excuses are keeping you from accepting and confessing your sin?
Lord help me be quick to agree with you about my sin, I pray.
