Some people have a specific passion for helping people in certain situations or places, and that’s wonderful. You might really want to help orphans in Haiti or single mothers in your community. If the Lord has put it on your heart, go for it.

If you’re not sure where to start… start here.

Start right where you are. Look around you and see who is there. Jesus said, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Maybe that’s your next-door neighbor. Maybe it’s your child’s teacher at school or your mail carrier. Do you know someone who lives alone, who needs extra help with daily activities, who has experienced some hardship, or who seems like an outsider? Learn what their needs are, and how you can bless them.

In part, today’s step into living on mission with your child is about pushing back against the tendency in our culture to put our blinders on and hurry through the day focused on our own plans, projects, and needs. Look around with your child and see who God has put next to you, the connections you already have. That’s your mission field.
